The narrative in this film about the wanderings of elephants in Botswana is leisurely, to say the least. While Jeremy Northam murmurs on the voiceover about "gentle giants", "fragile ecosystems" and "ancient wisdom", we follow the work of conservationist Mike Chase as he and his team put collars on elephants and try to follow their movements. But although not a lot happens, there are plenty of endearing shots of elephant herds, the kind of sequences that are extraordinarily peaceful and pleasant to watch. Disengage your brain and the footage of the great beasts plodding along in the dust, ears flapping, or groups of them splashing about in a muddy water hole could absorb you for hours. Mind you, then you'd miss out on the science bit, which involves the mental maps elephants make and, you've guessed it, their remarkable memory.
